Upanishads not that which the eye sees

This is a really philosophical text, asking some very intriguing questions. At some point anyone who is paying attention begins to wonder, how does my mind think? How do my eyes see? What energy causes this system of my body and the world to function? God is that energy, according to Kena Upanishad. Brahma is the method by which the world can be perceived.

Brahma is the breath, but also the ideal of breath, the very definition of what breath is. What is the Kena Upanishad? There are hundreds of Upanishads, but ten are considered principle texts, the most important ones.

These were written approximately years BCE. Get newsletters and updates Close. Also, send me the Hindu Newsletter and special offers. Also, send me the Hindu Newsletter. Toggle navigation. Reading the Upanishads: Kena chapter one December 3, Ambaa Choate Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

At whose command does the first breath go forth? At whose wish do we utter this speech? Different people, different language, same target. There are so many cross-overs between these two religions. Mark 4 21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? The truth is that we have a Creator who desires a personal relationship with us. Our sin blocks our fellowship with Him. All men have sinned against God and fall short of His holiness. We have all lied even a white lie, or have not been completely honest , we have all murdered Jesus says that if you have hated in your heart then you have committed murder , we have all worshipped other things, envied others, and gossiped.

The penalty for your sin is death and eternal life in a literal place called hell separated from God forever, tormented by Satan. He wore all of your shame and guilt on the cross and was the perfect and acceptable sacrifice for God. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

When you repent of your sins, confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God who took your place on that cross, died for you, was raised to life on the 3rd day, and receive Him as your personal Lord and Savior, you will be saved!

This is the grace of God. You cannot earn salvation, nor do you deserve it. Who is the god that directs the eyes and ears? The teacher replied: It is the Ear of the ear, the Mind of the mind, the Speech of speech, the Life of life and the Eye of the eye. Having detached the Self from the sense—organs and renounced the world, the Wise attain to Immortality.

The eye does not go thither, nor speech, nor the mind. We do not know It; we do not understand how anyone can teach It. It is different from the known; It is above the unknown. Thus we have heard from the preceptors of old who taught It to us. That which cannot be expressed by speech, but by which speech is expressed—That alone know as Brahman and not that which people here worship.

That which cannot be apprehended by the mind, but by which, they say, the mind is apprehended—That alone know as Brahman and not that which people here worship. That which cannot be perceived by the eye, but by which the eye is perceived—That alone know as Brahman and not that which people here worship. That which cannot he heard by the ear, but by which the hearing is perceived—That alone know as Brahman and not that which people here worship.

Commentary: Brahman alone exists. All other objects, such as the body, the senses, and the mind, are falsely superimposed upon It, like an illusory snake upon a rope.

As the rope is the true essence and self of the illusory snake, so Brahman is the essence and self of the eye, speech, the mind, and the rest. This essence, or Brahman, is Consciousness, the eternal and infinite Subject; It cannot be made an object of the material and finite senses.

The tongue defines an object by means of words. The words are said to meet the object. But Brahman is the very essence and self of all, including both the words and the tongue that utters them. Therefore speech cannot define Brahman. Fire, which burns and illumines other objects, cannot burn or illumine itself. Brahman the Ultimate Reality; the Universe; the Absolute is Pure Consciousness and cannot be know by man because it is not an object.

Brahman is the essence of the eye ' Eye of the eye' , the ear, the mind etc. Brahman is not the being who is worshiped of men. That which is not seen by the eye but by which the eye sees — know that to be Brahman. That which is not heard by the ear but by which the ear hears — know that to be Brahman.

That which is not drawn by the breath but by which the breath is drawn — know that to be Brahman. Who sends the mind to wander afar?

Who impels us to utter these words? Who is the Spirit behind the eye and the ear? It is the ear of the ear, the eye of the eye, and the Word of words, the mind of mind, and the life of life. Those who follow wisdom pass beyond and, on leaving this world. There the eye goes not, nor words, nor mind. We know not, we cannot understand, how can he be explained; He is above the known and he is above the unknown. Thus have we heard from the ancient sages who explained this truth to us. What cannot be spoken with words, but that whereby words are spoken: Know that alone to be Brahman, the Spirit; and not what people here adore What cannot be thought with the mind, but whereby the mind can think: Know that alone to be Brahman, the Spirit; and not what people here adore.
