Can you say these ones
Jacinta, Thank you for your help; it makes sense what you say. I'll bare it in mind. I have never used "these ones". It seems pretty clear to me now. Thanks everyone. I believe it to be grammaticaly incorrect to say "these ones" However a lot of English speaking people use it without realising it is incorrect and they probably wouldn't change if they knew it was!
Chevere33 Senior Member Midwestern U. We may be able to find it buried in a grammar book, but every time I hear it used infrequently, BTW , it's a little kid. In settings where you'd be careful with your grammar, I'd steer clear of it.
That's my personal opinion. Zeb "Those over there or these? Or second choice "Those over there or these over here? Chevere33 said:. Zebedee and all the others who have said that 'these ones' is grammatically correct have my vote as well. It seems that the usage is idiomatic in BE, while it is not in AE.
It sounds 'wrong' to AE speakers simply because they are not used to hearing it. AE speakers consistently say 'these' in cases in which a BE speaker might say 'these ones'.
It is not correct under any circumstances to say "these ones", or "those ones". No es correcto a decir "these ones" or "those ones" , es correcto, "these" o "those" y no mas.

Opinions often branch into one of three areas: Both are correct. To find the best answer, we need to peel back a few layers of language.
So, when you are writing or speaking: This shoe becomes these shoes when there is more than one. The construction is not new, although it seems to be more popular now than in the past. If I found either in a paper given me to correct, I would cross out ones in an instant. The problem is not that ones is being used as a plural or that these governs ones.
For example, the following phrases are standard:. The reason may lie with the proximity of these to ones. When no other adjective intervenes between these and ones , the listener interprets these as a pronoun, in which case, ones is redundant. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
